Fall 2009 – course in two parts:

- Part I: Thursdays, September 17 – October 22 (6 classes)
- Part II: Thursdays, November 5 – December 10 (6 classes)
Times are 1:30PM to 3:30PM, in Room 124 of Leeds House (basement level)
In the first half of each lecture I’ll teach about the legend, poem, or novel and in the second half about the composers and their pieces inspired by that literary work. My course always includes lectures about opera & ballets, performed during the weeks of the course in the NAC, presented by “Live performances from the Lincoln Centre” at the Cineplex Movie Theatres and in the National Archives of Canada, presented by Opera Lyra Ottawa’s Volunteer Group. One literary masterpiece, E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Sandman, will be the subject of two different lectures this year: in Part I. we will explore Delibes’ Coppelia, the ballet inspired by it and in Part II. Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffann. The opera will be shown at the Cineplex Theatres’ Live from the Met program on December 19th.
Here is the list of my lectures. Click on any session date for a colorful description of each class. The recommended viewing is listed on the page of every lecture.
